Rebecca’s Well on Crazies Hill

Description

The story of how the Reverend Grenville Phillimore raised enough funds to have a proper basin fitted, in 1870, to the spring in the woods at Crazies Hill that the locals knew as Rebra’s Well. The Reverend decided that Rebra must be a run-down form of the Biblical name Rebecca, for she was chosen to be Isaac’s wife when she went to the well to draw water. However the name derives from the Celtic ‘REB, BAR YAGH WY LLE’, meaning ‘The healthy water place, hard by the top of the Hill’.
