The kelp industry in Scilly

Description

The kelp industry can be described very simply as the burning of seaweed to produce soda-ash, which was extensively used in the manufacture of glass, soap and alum. The word “kelp” has been used to describe both the variety of seaweed and the ashes of the weed when burnt, which has led to ambiguity in some early reports of the industry.
